Welcome
Community Education
Community Education: In addition, Nafis Salaam has focused on reaching out to the diverse 600,000 Muslim residents of New York City. Program staff has created a visible New York City profile by 1) Creating postcards, prototype YouTubes, blogs and fliers in 8 languages & distributing over 6,000 fliers by hand; 2) Providing workshops to over 250 students at Al Iman and al Razi Schools; and to groups of 25—150 at mosques each month; 3) Reaching 30,000 area Muslims through advertising in TriState Muslims newspaper, the Message Magazine, and participating in diverse Muslim conferences and mosque fairs; 4) Measuring need and perception. Staff followed up an initial survey of leaders with a new survey including over 300 Muslim community members to date, see: links 5) Stepped up activities during our Ramadan Campaign focusing our efforts within the NY mosque community, promoting Friday sermons on quitting, workshops and support groups, with citywide media coverage.
In street and event outreach, NS staff has reached thousands of NYC Muslims at NABIC (North American Bangladeshi) and Islamic Circle of North America conventions, speaking at a panel on tobacco and related health concerns at the ICNA event. Staff has done energetic outreach at the Islamic Games (an Olympics for Muslims held an hour from NYC), the Turkish Day Parade and the Muslim Voice Festival at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Staff and volunteers have given out fliers at the Steinway Street Festival, and visited over 20 Hookah cafes there with our informational materials. Staff and volunteers have attended 3 cancer walks and several health related conferences like the World TB Day conference, and another on Lead Based products for South Asians. We have given out 6,000 fliers in four boroughs so far, around mosques and at Muslim Student Centers. A taste of recent outreach efforts at Jamaica Muslim Center can be seen in our short PSA: Here
